Bit more Hogarth study, mainly been trying to work out more personal ideas, having a go at a larger oil painting 20x30, it takes time just to cover the surface with paint, before you can even start thinking so much about edge and value, but you got to have a go I guess, I heard a saying not so long ago "if you haven't wasted paint you haven't learnt how to paint" from an interview with a comic artist, I can't seem to find it again. I may show the painting when I have worked out certain areas, first time working that large, I may have to restart over.

I did an oil sketch of one of my digital paintings that I created a few months back, it was never really finished, but I am thinking of painting it to a finish in oil instead of digital, so I did an oil sketch just to see how well I could handle it and in the process adding some other ideas for value and colour in places. The second is a study of a Edward Theodore Compton painting, just focusing on blocking in, and the third a Bridgman study.

This set-up has been really frustrating, painting with one lamp on my painting and one on the skull and the card set-up, (I have never really had a problem with having one lamp on my painting) but whenever I would turn all the lights back on in my room the colours and values would look completely different, mainly too dark or too light in places, so the light on my painting would make things appear lighter, it was really confusing, but I did the best I could. I had to readjust the darker values and half tones to make them lighter in certain areas, as there were certain areas such as the left cheekbone (skull's right) surrounded by shadow, the area lit would come through really light when looking back at it with all my lights switched on. But it all looked fine when painting with my one light on the skull. I'm not sure I made any sense there, I should really be going to sleep. Values could still use adjusting but I would like to move on now.

Bit more work on that Norman Rockwell study sheet, all need working over, I like to go back and forth between each study, plus will add some additional studies in the spaces. Mainly been working out what I want to do for a more personal work, just been getting ideas down, there all a bit rough, I'm going to try and make myself work a bit cleaner or just presentable.

Been a pretty relax day today, started a Norman Rockwell study sheet, and been thinking about some ideas for a painting, just a rough head sketch for what might be a full body character painting, I want to do it pretty large in oil, but there's a lot to work out yet. The idea is to have this shot looking up at him full body probably completely nude, I have some titles floating around such as "Goliath the destroyer" or "the killer" just a very brutal looking guy, set in maybe a snowy environment or cave.
